DC Type 2 plug
At EVS30 in Stuttgart, on October 9th 2017, we unveiled an experimental DC Type 2 plug that could be added to espresso&charge fastchargers. In fact the DC Type 2 plug represents the most compact and ergonomic solution for charging DC. The idea is not totally new, since already at the Geneva Motorshow 2012, EVTEC presented a move&charge DC-station equipped by a DC Type 2 plug, shown together with the LAMPO3 electric supercar from Protoscar:



Also the worldwide most successful series electric vehicles (both in the sedan- and SUV-segment) are featuring this technical solution on their European versions. Therefore a DC Type 2 plug on fast charging stations could make sense both from an operator point of view (since the DC Type 2 plug would contribute to a better utilization and therefore amortization of the investment) as well as from a user point of view (since no expensive adaptors would be needed any more).

espresso&charge is EVTEC’s universal charger enabling the complete road fleet of foreseeable electric cars to charge as fast as technically possible, offering up to 375A of DC charge current (170-1'000V). The charging station can be powered for up to 4 simultaneous charging sessions, supporting 150kW DC + 43kW AC + 22kW AC, single charges up to 150kW / 1'000V. The available DC Power can also be split to 90kW CCS and 60kW CHAdeMO. The DC Type 2 plug (currently limited to 50kW) will be installed on the double-sided espresso&charge 6in1, additional to the universal connectivity of CCS COMBO 2, CHAdeMO, AC Type 2 plug and socket.

After EVS30 the first DC Type 2 plug equipped espresso&charge stations are ready to be tested together with interested car manufacturers. Further development, in order to assure higher output power -up to well over 100kW-, also would be possible. In addition, the Swiss Fast Charging operator "GOttardo FASTcharge SA" is ready for installing this DC Type 2 plug options on some of its stations. This in order to performe a user-feedback testing program, as soon as the DC Type 2 plugs are available for public use.

DISCLAIMER
DC Type 2 plug on espresso&charge is a technical experimental prototype by the company EVTEC. The company Tesla asked us to communicate that “Tesla has not authorized the product nor have we in any way tested, validated, certified or otherwise evaluated or endorsed it, AND that we have expressed safety concerns and requested that you not use this charging system with our vehicles”.

If the available power from the grid is variable and sometimes limited, multiple fast charging stations are installed in the same location and/or PV or buffer-batteries are to be optimized, a specific management tool shall be used for optimizing the power flows. EVTEC’s “barista” is therefore the ideal software to optimally manage the integration of espresso&charge fast charger into the local grid.

Charge up to 4 EVs simultaneously
Instead of obliging investors to buy 2 chargers for assuring parallel DC-charging to more than one EV at the time, with only one single espresso&charge up to 2 EVs can be simultaneously charged in DC (plus up to 2 in AC), dramatically reducing the total investment, the queuing time for the final users and justifying the typical 2 parking lots reserved for charging in front of a fast charger (what is the sense of 2 reserved parking lots for charging, if EVs can be charged only one by one?).

espresso&charge therefore offers the best total return on investment: the only way for getting the same charging offer than espresso&charge using conventional fast charger would be to install two of those therefore doubling the investment!

In addition, thanks to the dynamic power-split of espresso&charge when only one EV is DC charged, than this first EV takes all the available power (up to 150kW). As soon as additional EVs are plugged-in, then the power of the charger is automatically and dynamically split among all the charging EVs. espresso&charge can serve even up 6 EVs, while charging up to 4 parallel!

Reduced capital expenditure
Save initial investment costs and start smart, with one non discriminative charging station, by sharing 100 - 120 kW DC power capacity for two electric vehicles and simply scale up later with minimized processes and cost.
Instead of investing in multiple charging stations one Ultra Fast Charger can serve up to four customers at the same time. That reduces not only the investment in charging stations but also installation costs like the connection to transformer substations, cabling, construction material and labour cost.
Due to the small footprint of 90cm x 90cm and a low weight in comparison with other multi-standard high power chargers on the market, a minimal effort to embed the standardized base in concrete is needed. The installation and configuration is as easy as “plug and play”. The Ultra Fast Charger dynamically limits the charging power to the connected vehicles to avoid an overload of the substation. Smart investors plan for a substation upgrade in the future inline with a forthcoming increased charging demand.
Economized operating costs
Delta’s Ultra Fast Charger is maintenance-free and ensures continuous operation. In a rare case that service is needed, the Ultra Fast Charger can be opened at three sites that enables one service technician to easily exchange failed parts.
The modular system design ensures availability. Even if one of the up to 15 power modules fail, the charger can still operate with only 10 kW reduced DC power. The light weight of the 10kW power modules can be handled by one single technician, therefore the maintenance time is reduced and the access to all vital components of the Ultra Fast Charger is easy, allowing rapid and economic on-site service.
Incentives
Several countries offer incentives supporting the installation of charging stations. Referring to fast chargers, incentive-schemes rapidly are starting differentiating on offered output power, in order to make sure that the installed equipment will support next-gen EVs asking for 70kW (like KIA SOUL or Hyundai IONIC are already taking today), 100kW and 150kW charging power. In Germany up to 300 Million Euro are made available to charging station investors, and the incentive rules clearly offer a premium for charger with a DC-Output of over 100kW.

Optimized maintainability — lowest service cost
espresso&charge is conceived for a very friendly maintenance: this charging station opens on three sides! The maintenance time can therefore be reduced and the access to all vital components of the espresso&charge is easy, allowing rapid and more economic (for opening the espresso&charge one technician is sufficient — no need for two peoples for opening the charger) on site service.

The light weight of the 10kW power modules of espresso&charge can be handled by one single technician while most other competitor feature very heavy power modules that are nearly impossible to be handled in the field without special equipment and require more than one technician. Of course the easy maintainability and service of espresso&charge contribute to a best-in-class TCO (Total Cost of Ownership).

First and most proven high-power fast charger
espresso&charge allows to charge up to 100 km range in just 10 minutes, thanks to its 150 kW DC maximum power. The first espresso&charge has been unveiled at the Geneva International Motor Show in 2015, as a world première. It was (and still is) 3 times more powerful than any other mass manufactured FAST CHARGER. It took a second manufacturer until mid 2017 presenting to the market a similar product, but being copied demonstrates that the original espresso&charge was right and has anticipated a real need, and can be considered as the real “father” of high power fast chargers.

espresso&charge is a full industrialized, certified, widely tested, commercially available product, not just a prototype. It has been successfully in operation in many sites over all seasons in Switzerland, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Germany, Finland and many more European countries demonstrating its reliability under very different climatic conditions.

Add power-modules only when you need it
Maximum DC power of espresso&charge can be scaled up -in smooth 10 kW steps- during the life of the charger. Customers may start with the desired entry level power, minimizing the initial investment and then scales it up to according the market needs. High power (150 kW) DC charging is the next automotive standard hitting the market in 2018 with Audi Q6 eTRON.

In the transition phase to higher charging EVs, it is important to be able to still serve “older” EVs capable of 50kW fast charging only. espresso&charge can charge both, modern EVs up to 150kW or several, parallel charging “older” EVs. The investor decides when the maximum DC power of its charger shall be increased, and can do this in smooth 10kW — steps. With competitors’ chargers, investors have only two options to match EV evolution: either start with a lower power and later replace the charger and double the investment or invest a lot of money for high power today but with a poor return on investment until the 150 kW cars will become mainstream.

The only charger with optional 1000 V-DC
This option allows the espresso&charge to operate in two DC voltage ranges: 170VDC-550VDC as well 340VDC-1000VDC. According the vehicle to be charged, the right voltage range is automatically set up. This feature makes espresso&charge already compatible with the future automotive and commercial vehicle standards. It will be able to charge a Porsche Mission-E offering 1000V, and therefore charging 100km of additional range in up to about 8 Minutes only.

Low noise during charge
Thanks to its’ high frequency power converter (which also explains the light weight compared to competitor’s fast charger), espresso&charge not only offer a better efficiency on all power loads and charging conditions, but also requires a smaller cooling-need and therefore a much more quiet operation of the charger (not only at nominal power — under all power conditions!). Particularly when using a fast charger in warm conditions on full power, some competitors are so loud that they cannot be installed in proximity of a hotel or restaurant.

Let’s imagine what happens in a very cold weather using a competitor’s charger: user wears off the gloves, grabs the cold plugs, plugs in, touches the cold display… - and let’s try to imagine now how the user will fell more confortable doing the same operation but wearing her or his gloves!

Built-in roof
espresso&charge is the only fast charger allowing to install a roof on it’s top therefore sparing the investment of a specific structure and ground-fixation or building to be expressly constructed around the fast charger. This all-weather roof is allowing your customer to operate the espresso&charge witheout getting wet in the rain or snow. In addition it also protects the connectors and the display for a improved long-life. Furthermore WEB-Cams and/or additional LED-lighting and movement sensors can easily be placed beneath this roof.

The optional roof can be installed also after having installed the espresso&charge and can be ordered as an option any time.
